Merino wool and wearing layers

Layering clothes simply means dressing in several layers of clothing. Each person experiences cold and moist in a different way. One can stand sub-zero temperatures with less clothing, whereas another feels cold on summer nights. Layering clothes enables an individual to prepare oneself in exactly the right way for outdoor activities. A BASE LAYER is closest to the skin. The most important tasks of the layer are to transfer moisture and provide thermal insulation. A base layer refers to underwear (underpants and bra) and the short and long sleeve shirts and pants belonging to the base layer set. A quality base layer set feels always warm and dry. The answer is merino wool. Its thin fibres wick moisture effectively, evaporating it into the air. The antibacterial quality of a base layer set made of merino wool keeps odour defects away. This characteristic is useful for example when on a hike and travelling. A base layer is of thinner knit than the mid layer. Combine the base layer with a covering layer in cool weather. Add mid layer when the base layer alone is not sufficient. It is individual how people experience the cold.

A MID LAYER is worn over the base layer. A mid layer’s task is to warm, breathe and to transfer moisture further outside through the covering layer. A piece of clothing is warm when it is able to bind air to itself. In this respect, merino wool is the most effective fibre in the world. More merino layers there are, more warming air settles within the knits. A good mid layer is flexible in order to be easily worn over the base layer. It is easy to move in a functioning base and mid layer combination, when they fit perfectly together. The whole can be supplemented with a merino wool jumper or jacket when it is freezing cold and when one has to stay outdoors for longer periods of time.
